Distance Students Dance Their Way to State-wide Recognition with Six HSC Callback Nominations

Southern Cross School of Distance Education is celebrating a remarkable achievement: four of its HSC Dance students have earned six Callback nominations for the HSC Dance Practical Examination from 2025.

Under the expert guidance of Belinda, Distance Education Dance Teacher, the students were recognised for excellence across multiple practical components. Callback nominations are awarded to HSC Dance students in NSW whose practical works demonstrate outstanding skill and creativity. This remarkable achievement highlights the talent, dedication, and resilience of both the students and the school’s innovative Dance program.

“I am extremely proud of the students whose commitment and hard work have been rewarded with this exceptional recognition. Collaborating with them through online lessons, mini school sessions, and face-to-face workshops to create these practical works has been an absolute joy,” said Belinda.

The nominated students studied the HSC Dance course as Single Subject enrolments through the Distance Education program, engaging in live online lessons, mini school activities, and teacher school visits. The students receiving these nominations are:

Musical Journey: How Distance Education Empowered Emma’s Artistic and Musical Excellence

Emma’s passion for violin and visual arts has flourished through the opportunities provided by the Southern Cross School of Distance Education. As a high-potential and gifted student, Emma undertook HSC Music Extension and Visual Arts as a Single Course Enrolment, demonstrating how distance education can successfully support students with unique talents and ambitions.

Balancing rigorous violin practice with specialist accompaniment lessons and differentiated online teaching, Emma embraced a tailored learning experience designed to meet her advanced skill level. Emma shared, “I looked forward to my Music Extension online weekly lessons,” highlighting the engaging and supportive nature of her studies.

Emma’s music teacher, Sharon, explained the importance of matching the course content to Emma’s high level of competence:
“As a performance major student, hitting the right notes of challenge and meeting Emma’s technical facility was crucial. The online course materials were specifically written for high potential and gifted musicians, incorporating evidence-based research strategies to enhance performance efficiency, strengthen performance mental skills, and nurture talent development—all while aligning with syllabus requirements.”

Emma’s artistic journey through Visual Arts was equally remarkable. Her teacher, Tiffany, worked closely with Emma to push creative boundaries and explore new techniques, encouraging her to develop a bold and expressive body of work titled Musical Journey. Inspired by music’s universal power to spark imagination and transcend reality, Emma’s series blends themes of nature, sound, and emotion through richly textured abstract paintings.

Tiffany remarked,
“It has been inspiring to see Emma step outside her comfort zone, experimenting with new artistic movements, perspectives, and mediums.  Musical Journey  not only reflects her dual passion for art and music but also her willingness to take creative risks, blending techniques and influences to create work that is uniquely her own.”

Emma’s artworks feature a mix of watercolour, acrylic, pearlescent paint, and unconventional tools such as bottle caps and finger-blending, drawing inspiration from masters like Van Gogh and Rothko, while remaining deeply personal. This fusion of music and visual art showcases how distance education can nurture multifaceted talent and creativity.

Emma was the 2025 Winner of the Single Course High Potential and Gifted Award for SCSoDE.

Looking ahead, Emma aspires to pursue tertiary studies in Music and dreams of becoming a concert violinist, a goal made possible by the flexibility and expert support offered through distance education.

The success of Emma’s educational journey highlights the NSW Department of Education’s commitment to providing tailored, high-quality learning experiences that empower students to excel in their passions—no matter where they live.

Snowboard Champion Channels Olympic Dreams into Stunning HSC Artwork, Capturing the Thrill of ‘Run for Gold’

Balancing the demands of elite sport and senior study is no easy feat, but for one aspiring Olympic snowboarder, distance education has made it possible to chase both dreams.

Through flexible learning opportunities, this HSC student has been able to tailor timelines around intense training and international competition schedules while still completing a rigorous course of study. With the option to work both face-to-face and online, distance education provides the support and structure needed for students whose commitments extend beyond the classroom.

The program not only enables students to complete their studies but also offers a wide variation of supports. From one-on-one online sessions and tailored feedback on creative projects, to access to teachers during key assessment milestones, distance education ensures that students receive academic guidance, personal encouragement, and the flexibility required to succeed.

This flexibility has allowed the snowboarder to develop a stunning Visual Arts body of work, titled Run for Gold. The series explores the range of emotions experienced during snowboarding and high-level competition. Each watercolour portrait captures a different expression—anger, sadness, happiness, and contentment, reflecting the mental and emotional challenges of the sport.

“I wanted to show how snowboarding isn’t just about physical performance, it’s about the emotional highs and lows too,” the student explained. Using abstraction and colour to communicate feelings, warmer tones represent joy while cooler, darker tones symbolise struggle. Fluid linework and icy backgrounds unite the five works, echoing the rhythm and flow of carving across snow.

This achievement highlights the value of distance education: empowering students to pursue excellence in both their personal passions and academic goals. With adaptable timelines, a blend of online and in-person support, and teachers who understand the needs of diverse learners, distance education opens the door to success, whether in the classroom, on the slopes, or on the world stage.
