High Potential Pathways Program

The High Potential Pathway Pilot program at Southern Cross School of Distance Education (SCSoDE) provides an opportunity for high potential and gifted education (HPGE) students to access learning experiences that extend beyond their current stage of learning. The pilot has been developed as a trial to support students whose academic potential may not be fully met through the curriculum opportunities, staffing or subject options available within their local school context, particularly for students in regional and remote communities.

Aligned with the NSW Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) Policy, the pilot supports students through targeted differentiation, enrichment and subject-specific acceleration. The pathway enables eligible Stage 3 students to access selected Stage 4 learning opportunities while continuing to engage with their home school, peers and broader school community.

Delivered through SCSoDE’s established distance education model, the pilot provides students with access to specialised teachers, challenging curriculum experiences and opportunities to develop independent learning skills in a supportive online environment. Students remain connected to their primary school while participating in advanced learning that is matched to their readiness, interests and demonstrated potential.

The High Potential Pathway Pilot program is designed to promote equity of access, ensuring that a student’s opportunity to be challenged and extended is not limited by geographic location, school size or available local resources. Through collaboration between SCSoDE, partner schools, students and families, the pilot supports the development of confident, engaged and capable learners who are appropriately challenged and supported to achieve their potential.

Participating schools work in partnership with SCSoDE by identifying suitable students, supporting individual learning plans and monitoring student wellbeing and engagement. SCSoDE provides Stage 4-aligned learning experiences, ongoing feedback and reporting to the student’s home school to support a coordinated approach to student growth and achievement.

The High Potential Pathway Pilot program represents an innovative approach to flexible learning, providing a supported pathway for acceleration and extension while strengthening opportunities for high potential learners across NSW.
